Resolve

Resolve highlights that for which it is named - resolve. It is meant to give an audible version of the feeling, whether it be resolve to keep going, to push forward, or to overcome. It shows the weight and meaning of the decision but also the calm such determination can bring.

Submerged Sky

Submerged Sky is a take on impressionism. This piece plays with the dual imagery of looking up at the sky from beneath the water’s surface and also of seeing the sky reflected on the water’s surface. This piece was performed in conjunction with Japanese calligraphy legend, Shuho Kondo at Phipps’ Japanese Inspirations Fall Flower Show.

Katápa Suite

The Katápa Suite is a collection of three programatic movements based on the greek myth of Alcyone and Ceyx, a couple so in love they grow arrogant and are punished by the gods. Not ending in tragedy, the couples love moves the gods to give them a form of grace at the end of the story. The movements “Alcyone”, “Curse of the Storm”, and “Ceyx” follow the story’s main themes of happiness, punishment, and sorrow followed by redemption. This piece was performed as a reading by Nat 28, a Pittsburgh contemporary ensemble.

Crossing Chasms

This piece was written as a result of the COVID-19 quarantine. During the quarantine Carnegie Mellon University put together a virtual concert, featuring multiple composers who were asked to write a piece designed to be played in a virtual performance space. Crossing Chasms was inspired by the physical distance that the quarantine forced upon everyone and coming up with a way to bridge that gap through music.

Crossing Chasms takes normally troublesome issues of virtual performance, such as latency and internet connection, and uses it to the advantage of the music by removing the idea of strict tempos and instead focusing on each performers’ perceived time of the music as it unfolds.
